Flea markets are treasure troves, but they can also be intimidating. Which is why today I want to share with you my inside tips, honed from more than 20 years of shopping the flea markets, to maximize your time and uncover hidden gems.

1. Always start at the back and work your way forward.

Beat the crowds and maximize your chances of finding the best stuff by starting at the back of the venue and working your way toward the front entry. The back is always less picked-over and more disorganized, which makes it ripe for finding bargains.

2. Bring a trolley on wheels.

I always feel super smart when I bring a trolley on wheels. I don’t care that I look silly, especially when I see other people around me struggling to juggle armfuls of items. Having a convenient way to transport your finds will make navigating the flea market so much easier and more enjoyable.

3. Don’t be afraid to haggle.

At a flea market, it’s okay to haggle on prices. For instance, this iron Boston Terrier dog had a $45 price tag on it. I negotiated and the seller let it go for $30.

4. Ask your vendor to hold larger items.

Whenever I buy a larger item, I ask the vendor to hold it for me until I’m done shopping. This way, I don’t have to worry about hauling it around and having it slow me down. Most vendors are happy to hold items, especially because it looks good for them when they have desirable goods marked “sold” on display.

5. Dress in layers and come early!

Flea markets can be unpredictable, with weather conditions ranging from chilly mornings to scorching afternoons, depending on where you are. Be prepared for anything by dressing in layers that you can easily shed or add as needed. Additionally, I recommend arriving early to ensure you’ll have the first pick of the best merchandise before the crowds descend.

Armed with these insider tips, you’re well on your way to conquering the flea market like a seasoned pro, and finding plenty of hidden gems.

And speaking of hidden flea market gems, here are a few I’ve uncovered over the years.
